OFAER assessors are trained in a four-day classroom and in-field training course. This course discusses program development, history, protocols, procedures, and processes as well as potential environmental issues as they relate to livestock facilities.
There is a set protocol to become a certified assessor. The background we look for in an assessor is to have the following:
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledge of animal production in one or more of these areas: swine, beef, dairy, or poultry
- Some professional affiliation, advance education beyond high school, or 5 plus years experience in
the environmental or agriculture industry
- Assessors must be able to fulfill the physically demanding portion of the assessment which may include: climbing ladders, climbing stairs, walking rough terrain, walking
manure storage perimeters, extensive walking during visits, walking facility layouts, as well as walking in confined areas that might contain livestock of many types, exposure to adverse weather and climate conditions, and other related activities.
